American Lung Association meets BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards

SuperKids Summer Experience

The American Lung Association of the City of New York knows that asthma management doesn’t end with the school year. To extend learning from the organization’s Open Airways For Schools program, the ALACNY offers SuperKids so that children in the five boroughs can enjoy the pleasures of summer while becoming experts in managing their asthma. The SuperKids program provides day and sleepaway camp learning opportunities for children.

This past summer, twenty-eight children were awarded their certificates of accomplishment as “asthma experts” when they graduated from the first-ever SuperKids Summer Experience in Harlem. The six-week program offers children with asthma swimming, games, arts and crafts, and more. Additionally, specially-trained counselors and medical staff teach the children about asthma medications triggers and management techniques that are vital to their success in controlling this chronic lung disease.

Each year, children with moderate asthma are invited to attend Camp SuperKids, a one-week camp in Pennsylvania. The camp welcomes boys and girls between the ages of eight through thirteen. Our specially-trained medical staff, consisting of physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists, is housed at the camp and is on-call at all times. Not only does Camp SuperKids provide children with asthma the opportunity to attend camp, but it also teaches them valuable skills to manage their asthma, which will lead to enjoying healthier lives.
